"My state of health forbade me from traveling to Berlin for the annual gathering of scholars to greet my old friends there; yet my long confinement to a sickbed was alleviated—and illuminated by a friendly ray of hope—when a certain plant, which had suffered so severely from the harshness of the weather that I had given it up for lost, recovered so remarkably that it was, as it were, awakened to a new life; it put forth fresh foliage, sent up two shoots, and, to my heartfelt joy, burst into bloom. Regarding this plant—according to a letter sent to me dated January 18th of this year—His Excellency, State Minister von Goethe, found it to be of particular interest due to a mode of propagation quite unusual among its kin (namely, reproducing via the crown); he identified it as a species of the genus *Anthericum* and enclosed in the same letter a specimen of its flower, which served to confirm this generic classification. By command of His Royal Highness—the late, revered, and now blessed Grand Duke of Weimar—this plant was dispatched to me in Prague (via Dresden) by State Minister von Goethe on March 22nd of this year; however, during transport, it suffered so severely from the onset of bitter cold that, save for its roots. Nevertheless, she was carefully tended in the garden of Count Calm and made a complete recovery, as previously mentioned. When her blossoms unfolded, she revealed herself to be a hitherto unknown species of the genus *Anthericum*; consequently, the accompanying accurate illustration—depicted in natural size—was prepared, and a detailed description thereof follows below."
